Antique Orkney Chair
This Orkney chair is one of the most unique and special items to ever land in our possession.
Orkney chairs are made on the northern islands of Scotland; their design originated a few hundred years ago, made by the crofters on the island to protect against wind, and for practical use. Originally closer to the ground to keep smoke from the fire away from the person occupying the chair, and sometime accompanied by a hood, these chairs were made from driftwood and straw from local fields. The lack of wood growing on the islands forced the makers to scour for driftwood. Today the chairs continue to be made by craftspeople on the islands, now using other woods, in a traditional style taught and handed down over generations.
This particular chair for sale is believed to be from the 19th century, and is in excellent condition. Age-appropriate wear throughout, structurally sound.
